Summary/Abstract: Visual representations of femininity in the paintings of the greatest masters of 19th-century Polish painting ultimately codify this figure as the virgin Polonia. Itis worth mentioning, however, that in the paintings showing the captive and half-naked Polonia, it wasfolk women that were used as models and they were ascribed with an “unbridled character” and indulgence in pleasures. Małgorzata Drohomirecka, a Polish artistwho settled in London, uses the works of Wyspiańskiand Malczewski to create a new Polonia that clearly resists the leading discourse. When investigated closely, it proves to be a nationalist self-admiration, adorning its own suffering while being merciless towards otherness, sometimes even revealing its “pogrom” inclinations.
