Preparing Students for the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) Higher – Truth or Dare?

Summary/Abstract: The Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) Higher is a challenge that some students dare to take. The present paper investigates the different aspects related to student motivation, learning strategies and the usefulness of this Cambridge certificate in the context of the Romanian job market. After looking into the reasons that precede the students’ decision to take the BEC Higher Certificate, the paper analyses the strategies that successful students use both before and during the examination. Finally, we investigate the usefulness of BEC Higher and similar Cambridge certificates by presenting results from some interviews with both former students and employers.
