Nikolai Berdyaev as an Interpreter of the Philosophy and Religion of Dostoevsky

Summary/Abstract: This work presents the thoughts of a famous Russian religious philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev about philosophical and religious attitudes of a great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky. In Berdyaev’s opinion Dostoevsky is, above all, a thinker who puts the man and his freedom into the centre of his perceptions. He points out Dostoevsky’s focus on the destiny of the man in freedom and the destiny of freedom in the man. The tragedy of freedom is in the fact that it has its own nature and it cannot be identified with the good and perfection. The freedom of good implies the freedom of evil. According to Berdyaev, through his creativity, Dostoevsky shows us that freedom of evil leads to destruction of the man and freedom itself, but also that only the recognition of freedom of the good leads to denial of freedom which is then born into necessity of the good. Everything that happens in the man is reflected in social circumstances. Socialism, which imposes itself as a secular religion, presents violence towards human freedom. The solution to the secret of freedom should be sought in Christ who is not only the truth which gives freedom, but also the truth about freedom and the only free truth for the man.
