Risk Factors for Pneumonia in the Elderly

Summary/Abstract: Pneumonia in younger and older patients is similar in many categories, but there are many differences that are essential for early diagnosis, proper treatment, and prevention in older patients. Characteristic categories for the elderly patient are oligosymptomatics, cognitive impairment and, in general, the consequences of the aging process. The main risk factor for pneumonia is age over 65 years. Current knowledge about the risk factors for pneumonia in old age suggests the need for a comprehensive and individual approach to the issue.
