Summary/Abstract: The matter of style in Orthodox Church polyphony can be clarified by comparing Eastern and Western polyphonic practice and – more specifically –their models for sacred music. This investigation is based on the parallel between Russian and Western modality and the principles of connecting textural voices. The voices in Orthodox polyphony are not equal, which is why the universal principle in the vertical events could not be derived. Nevertheless, Orthodox scores do possess a high degree of vertical organization.
