Summary/Abstract: A fulminating personality of Byzantine culture was Joseph Bryenios. The Emperor and Patriarch directly promoted Bryennios of Crete, for his exceptional culture. These events occurred before year 1400. In Constantinople he was clearly successor to Meliteniotes. He confessed about his burden of successorship. In addition to Patriarch, the Emperor appoints him to the position of advisor for various educational conferences and leaves him his library, as inheritance. He held theological speeches in front of the Emperor, the Senate and a select auditorium of the imperial palace and in the Church of the Apostles. He taught, however, also grammar, rhetoric and philosophy and had many Byzantine and Italian students or pupils from other parts of the world.
