ST. DIONYSIUS PSEUDO-AREOPAGITE IN THE CONTEXT OF THE POST METAPHYSICAL PHILOSOPHY

Summary/Abstract: St. Dionysius Pseudo-Areopagite in the Context of the Post Metaphysical Philosophy. This study analyses the importance of Dionysius Pseudo-Areopagite’s apophatic thought for the contemporary post metaphysical context, taking into consideration the philosophy of Jean-Luc Marion and Gianni Vattimo. The influence of Dionysius’ philosophy on Marion was considerable, being apparent in the manner in which the French phenomenologist creates concepts like “God without being”, the idol, the icon, and the distance. Moreover for Vattimo’s concept of “weak thought” and for a secularized and nihilist postmodern Christianity the Dionysian philosophy represents an answer and a bridge for dialogue with the faith of the Church. Starting from apophatic theology, in the absence of which the dogmas of the faith suffer from an unavoidable “weakness”, this text tries to offer an answer, sometimes in an apologetic manner, emphasizing the similarities but also the fundamental differences between the status of metaphysics in post-modernity and the status of dogmas in the Church Tradition.
