CHARACTERIZATION OF RECYCLABLE PLASTIC WASTE

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the detailed characterization of the examined types of recyclable plastic waste: PET packaging waste, mixed plastic waste and hard plastic waste. The tested types of plastic waste are obtained by sorting the collected waste in the processes of primary and secondary selection in the PWW company in Leskovac. Characterization of recyclable plastic waste includes: sampling, identification with waste categorization, characterization depending on the degree of hazard, determination of hazardous substances concentration in waste, determination of physicochemical characteristics, determination of toxicological characteristics and its effects on human health, determination of possible environmental etc. Characterization process begins with sampling and ends with reporting. Previous experiences from the company about the similar technological systems directly leads to the goal, and help in defining activities and developing a program of the characterization procedure. Also they affect on measures and protection of the participants, especially when substances that the waste could include are dangerous. The main goal of this paper is to make a conclusion based on the characterization of recyclable plastic waste, in case that the waste is hazardous or not, and depending on that, to make a decision which disposal methods should be applied.
