GORDON GOODWIN’S BIG PHAT BAND: AN EXAMPLE OF THE MODERN BIG BAND

Summary/Abstract: Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band is one of the most famous jazz orchestras of the 21st century that combines the style of big bands from the swing era with the contemporary ones such as funk and jazz fusion. The scores of the Big Phat Banddemonstrate an ingenious use of the possibilities of orchestral instruments and groups, representing a touchstone for any jazzorchestra, but also a true manual for any arranger and conductor of the big band. The purpose of this article is to characterizesome peculiarities of the style of Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band based on the examination of three scores of different stylistic orientation from the orchestra’s repertoire.
