Summary/Abstract: The results of the study into the court registers of the Sarajevo kadilik for the period 1707-1828 enable us to draw a series of conclusions about the book culture of that time, including the question of the distribution of books among the residents of Sarajevo in an era of a primarily manuscript culture. The obtained data are compared with the results for four more Ottoman cities: Damascus, Salonica, Sofia and Trabzon. It is possible to conclude that the residents of Sarajevo had on average more books than the inhabitants of these four cities. Nevertheless, this conclusion should be considered preliminary in nature until more uniform criteria for researching book ownership in the Ottoman Empire are established.
