Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the issues of changing the pedagogical paradigm in the direction of active learning, the goal of which is for students in higher education to effectively acquire, apply, create and share knowledge. The first part of the paper examines the theoretical foundations of active learning and the educational imperatives for active learning, while showing the development of some of the main concepts that currently support the epistemology of active learning. The second part of the paper presents active learning methods suitable for work in higher education, whether in lectures, exercises or seminars. Among others, some active learning methods that promote critical thinking, leadership, innovation and creativity are presented. Active learning methods are grouped according to their purpose, i.e. methods suitable for introductory classes or the introductory part of classes, methods of content processing, identification, repetition and feedback methods.
