Types of Thematic Tafsir

Summary/Abstract: The goal of this work is to: a) detect the types of thematic tafsir in relevant works addressing the issue, b) define and classify them, and c) cite concrete examples for a particular type of thematic tafsir and for relevant literature which provides its theoretical foundation. The article presents different views on the types of thematic tafsir with their short introduction. Most contemporary authors and researchers speak of three different types of thematic tafsir: 1. Thematic tafsir of a single qur’anic term (al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī li al-muṣṭalaḥ al-qurʼānī), 2. Thematic tafsir within a qur’anic theme (al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī li al-mawḍūʻ al-qurʼānī), 3. Thematic tafsir of a qur’anic sūrah (al-tafsīr al-mawḍūʻī li sūrah al-qurʼānī). The work presents definitions, gives examples and displays the most important authors and their works for each of the three categories of thematic tafsir.
