Summary/Abstract: Understanding the term preference ( الاختيار ) in the science of Qur’an recitation (ʻilm al-qirāʼah) is an important precondition for understanding the genesis of the science, i.e. the chains of transmission by which the Qur’an is recited today. It is an uncontested premise that there is no room for human impact (ijtihād) in reading the Qur’anic text since the Qur’an was, by definition, established through massive transmission (tawāṭur) from the Prophet p.b.u.h. A question may be asked: how should we understand the concept of preference with regard to different traditions of recitation (qiraʼāt) without contradicting the afore-mentioned principle? Answers to that question require more detailed research into the literature about the issue of limiting different qirāʼāt starting from paths of transmission, to solutions to Qurʼan orthography, to linguistic criteria and to arguments rooted in tafsir about the reasons and principles of divergence in qirāʼāt. This work is an attempt to offer adequate answers, if only in a concise form, to the question of preference in different qirāʼāt and to the shedding light on the notion of al-ikhtiyār as a technical term in the Arabic literature on the science of Qurʼan recitation.
