Summary/Abstract: Several sources contemporary to Muḥammad ʻAbduhū refer to his travels in Europe. This essay focuses primarily on the reports by Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā about some of the travels, their significance and ʻAbduhūʼs views on Europe. The essay also describes ʻAbduhū with Herbert Spencer, the greatest English philosopher of the Victorian era. Riḍā presented his notes about their conversation in his bibliographical work Tārīẖu l-ustāḏi l-imām (Biography of the Professor and Imam) dedicated to Muḥammad ʻAbduhū. This article also refers to ʻAbduhūʼs lively interest in the humanistic tradition and its thinkers in Europe of his time. During his relatively short life (he died at the age of 55) Muḥammad ʻAbduhū spent some time in England, France and Switzerland and he visited Sicily, Austria and Germany. He also spent some time in Lebanon and visited Istanbul, Algeria, Tunis, Sudan.
