Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present basic information about the sources for the study of freedom of religion in Islamic law. It is about the fundamental sources of Islamic law, the Qur'an and the Sunnah, state official practice of early caliphs, traditional and modern Islamic legal theory and Islamic schemes of human rights. Qur'anic revelation has set universal principles concerning freedom of religion and the relationship of Muslims towards people of different beliefs and commitments, such as those that prohibit compulsion in religion and the diversity of beliefs among people qualify as an expression of the Divine plan. Sunnah of the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) and the first four caliphs offered the basis for the development of the traditional Muslim model of protection of religious minorities - system dimme. The modern concept of freedom of religion in the West and its acceptance in international human rights instruments in the twentieth century set the challenge to contemporary Islamic legal thought to be appropriately reflected towards these developments.
