Summary/Abstract: Tulcea it’s a city with a theatrical tradition. Although the first professional theatre, Urmuz Theatre, appears in Tulcea in the year 1999,on the shores of this Danube city there were, before 1989, a series of amateur companies, The Dramatic Circle, that in 1958, on the second year of its existence, became the Popular Theatre, "Studiul Z", created in1973 and Teatrul Tineretului (1980) and Orizont (1989). To these, in 1990, joins „Altar“, the first unprofessional theatre that appeared after the events that took place in 1989. These companies, but also the Theatre Festival „Tragos“, born in 1993, were the starting points for the first professional theatre, Urmuz, which functioned as a section of the Artistic County Center within Tulcea’s County Council until 2001, and then as a section of the Cultural County Center „Ludovic Paceag“, until 2003, when it was disbanded because of some financial issues. At the same time with Theatre „Urmuz“, in Tulcea there was also functioning the independent theatre company „Exil“. In this social-cultural context, on the 15th of February 2008, „Jean Bart” Theatre was inaugurated in Tulcea, a cultural institution that lives to this day, in spite of the difficulties he has encountered.
