Summary/Abstract: Târgu-Mureş is one of the traditional cultural centers from Transylvania. Its cultural roots may be find in the 16th century, when the first school library has been founded near the Scola Particula. During the Enlightenment, the count Teleki laid the foundation of Bibliotheca Telekiana; this library became one of the most important cultural places from this area. Its values: ancient books – incunabula, but also the latest novelties from different domains – sciences, history, law etc. – represented a permanent source of interest for all Transylvanian scholars. During the 19th century, as the number of schools increases, a lot of specialized libraries were founded. More than that, in this century some confessional libraries are noticed. However, public reading was still a wish. At the begining of the 20th century, in 1913, when the Cultural Palace has been opened, the town library began its activity with no more than 300 books. It was only the begining, because in a short time, the collections became larger and larger. Today, the County Library is considered to be the largest county library from Romania, not only because of its large collections, but also because the quality of its services and the devotedness of the librarians.
