Summary/Abstract: The article presents a theoretical-methodological framework for the study of politeness at three levels, which reflects the author’s views on the functional approach to linguistic analysis. At the level of universals (sociopragmatics) politeness is understood as aiming at social comfort; at the ethnocultural level (linguistic pragmatics) the stereotypical formulas of politeness in a given community should be situated; at discourse level (discursive pragmatics) the researcher’s task is to describe all politeness techniques available in specific communicative situations.
