Summary/Abstract: The new book by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rossitsa Draganova, namely “Music in the Bulgarian School at the End of the 19th and the Beginning of the 20th Century”, is dedicated to the formation and specifics of music teaching practice in Bulgaria after the Liberation of 1878. The focal centre of interest is school as one of the main places for making music and something of a home to the actively developing Bulgarian musical culture. This sets forth the tasks of the research, which are related to the discovery and rethinking of music pedagogical practice and are also in line with an attempt to update our knowledge about the processes in and the figures of Bulgarian music during the period. Following the historical music education processes structured in three stages and interpreted in a broader historical, educational, musical cultural, instructive and other conceptual frameworks, the text is structured in three main chapters plus a fourth one presenting (through biographical information and comments) the role of 32 figures of Bulgarian music and education from that time, the current sources on whom have been referenced. In terms of introducing periodization the author relies on documents that are decisive for music education. The very structure of the text implies the broad and factually saturated documentary scope of research. It is characterized by extreme precision grounded in extensive study and documentary literature (both existing and newly unearthed archival sources) as well as by a modern critical reading of existing studies of the subject. Thus, Rossitsa Draganova’s text ranks among the most serious musicological works dedicated to important areas of our musical history. This determines not only the musicological value of the publication, but also its utility for students and practicing music pedagogues, and more broadly, for all those interested in this fundamental topic of Bulgarian education and spirituality.
