Summary/Abstract: Iliya Gramatikoff’s book is an unusual edition in musicological practice. Inspired by the music of Bulgarian composer Gheorghi Arnaoudov (1957) – an author with successful worldwide appearances, this analytical research is filled with imagery materialized graphically by the artist Yasen Pankov through a creative dialogue with the text. There are over 250 illustrations specially made for the publication, such as digital collages with original drawings and a plethora of other graphic materials from various historical epochs and styles. They “provide a visual image of individual key ideas related to both the study and the spirit of Arnaoudov’s music” (Iliya Gramatikoff). (As an illustrator of historical, scientific and children’s literature and on the occasion of the deluxe first edition of the book, Yasen Panov was given the prestigious 2020 “Revived Heritage” award by the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.) Iliya Gramatikoff’s research commands respect by virtue of the tasks he has set himself and also by the introduced “symphonic” exploratory strategy deployed on a broad humanitarian horizon. Gheorghi Arnaoudov’s compositional approach has been multifacetedly discussed in the fields of contemporary concert genre interpretation and individual composer’s style. A broad-spectrum reflection upon the works on multiple levels has been achieved by means of combining various types of analysis. Iliya Gramatikoff seeks answers to a number of questions. He formulates them metaphorically and in harmony with Gheorghi Arnaoudov’s music. The architectonic organization of the text (also traceable in the detailed contents) follows, as specifically emphasized, the model of the retornello form, characteristic of the instrumental concert genre since the time of its formation. Iliya Gramatikoff’s analytical freedom and imagination are intriguing. For him, obviously, musicological research without deviating in the least from high scientific criteria can fit harmoniously into the field of art creating “sounds” in a new artistic form through analyzed and visually transformed “in-image musical stories.”
