Summary/Abstract: The essay discusses the exhibition and narrative framework at the Ethnological Museum of Prishtina (EMP). The essay opens with a discussion of the political and cultural context, which briefly highlights the geist of development of museums in the region, both in the 19th century and during communism, and highlights their post-socialist changes. Furthermore, the essay provides a critical discussion of museums in the context of identity and nation building, with a particular focus on EMP exhibition and narratives provided by museum guides. The essay also discusses local ethnological interpretations of culture and history which feed into the practices, narratives and strategies of representation of “Kosovo cultural story” appropriated for museum display. In the end, the essay argues that although the exhibitions in Kosovo museums are almost homogeneous, there is an “invitation to dialogue" witnessed in EMP.
