Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses poetic aspects of a non-literary text, The Impossible Evasion, by Lena Constante, one of the most important testimonials on the communist persecutions in post-war Romania. Studied mostly for the information it provides on the Romanian concentration system, the book provides interesting insights into how the poetics of “telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth” deals in culturally constructed, figurative strategies. Where most critics have read it as an ethical document, this paper proposes a rhetorical reading, revealing the irreducible power of discourse in our contact with truth and evidence.
