Translation Activities of Diplomat and Encümen-i Dâniş Member Sahak Abro [Sahag Abroyan/Սահակ Ապրօեան] from Western Languages

Summary/Abstract: The period of stagnation and then the decline of the Ottoman Empire after the establishment and rise periods brought up the issue of reforms that the state needed in many areas. It has been understood that the reform steps initiated in the military field alone will not be enough to meet these needs, and it has emerged that a radical reform is inevitable over time. At this point, fundamental reforms were made in many areas, especially with the Tanzimat and Islahat, but the regression process that the state fell into could not be stopped. The radical reforms carried out in this sense had some repercussions on non-Muslims as well. In this process, also known as the "modernization period", the state started to send students abroad for educational purposes, especially in the fields it needed. The experiences of these students in the European countries they mostly go to have started to show their effects in the country after they return home. In addition, many works from different languages have been translated into Turkish. Non-Muslims had an important effect on the translation of these translations into Turkish. Many important works of the period were translated into Turkish through Armenian intellectuals, thanks to their interests and skills in foreign languages and their experiences abroad. One of the names who made these translations is Sahak Abro, who is better known for his outstanding achievements in diplomacy and bureaucracy. After giving a brief overview of Abro's life and works in this article, the importance of Abro's translations for the history of Ottoman modernization will be emphasized.
