Summary/Abstract: The control of written culture was aimed at overseeing the production, dissemination and reception of the book, perceived as an active and fluid tool for changing the mentalities of different communities. Our analysis focused on identifying the evolutionary stages of knowledge control in the Danube Principalities and the Ottoman Empire in the mid-nineteenth century and through the subsequent decades. The censorship practices developed during that time period carry the imprint of some forms of control on which we can still reflect when we talk about the present or the future.
