Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to address the issue of Spanish metalinguistic phraseology, composed of two classes of units: 1) those that describe any aspect of linguistic action and 2) those that have a metapragmatic value, that is, fulfill different pragmatic-discursive functions. The phraseological units, which are the object of our study, form part of the second subfield of the metalinguistic phraseology, and, from the semantic point of view, belong to the somatic phraseology, since they contain terms for body parts as base constituents (tongue, ear, hand). Th ese somatic lexemes related to verbal activity have not been chosen at random. The purpose of the study is to analyze not only phraseological units with primarily metalinguistic lexical basis that play a direct physical role in linguistic communication, but also to analyze those units that develop and specifically realize metapragmatic values secondarily. The article pretends to show that, apart from the metalinguistic idioms with conceptual, descriptive or ideational meaning, there are also units whose meaning is a result of grammaticalization and it is directly related to their pragmatic-discursive functions.
