Summary/Abstract: The last volume of the Relecturas y nuevos horizontes en los studios hispánicos publication contains articles presenting the variety of linguistic research and didactic solutions in the contemporary hispanic world. The linguistics section deals with issues such as manipulation of journalistic discourse, selected causal constructions, spatial metaphors used in legal language, persuasion in the press addressed to men, linguistic politeness, the use of tenses in Polish and Spanish Civil Code, self-censorship as a pragmatic phenomenon, and historical use of honorary titles. The second part of this volume contains seven texts presenting a panorama of the contemporary methodology of teaching Spanish both in Poland and around the world.

- Keywords:morphology; Spanish; stereotypes; semantics; suffixation
- Summary/Abstract:This study aims at providing a solution to the problem of masculine nouns ending in -ón, and whose semantic value does not show the augmentative feature traditionally attached to such a termination. Based on a wide corpus of written and oral examples in contemporary Spanish, the study is an attempt to give a unitary explanation to the multiplevalues of the so-called augmentative termination -ón. The basic claim, elaboratedwithin the framework of the Theory of Stereotypes, is that all the posible values of thetermination can be accounted for by a common underlying value plus a set of generalsemantic rules. The frequently mentioned scalarity of such nouns then appears to be anon-primitive characteristics.

- Keywords:news; manipulation; lexical; rhetorical figures; implicature
- Summary/Abstract:Although broadcasting news from any part of the world apparently seems an objective process, however, when the reader is exposed to that information he starts valuingthe ideas as transmitted by the news media and consequently there may come a time when he loses the critical skills resulting in becoming an object of manipulation by highly persuasive powers. Journalists are aware of this power and the immense impact they may have in shapingthe public opinion by using the most powerful tool, the lexicon, as an important means of expression, revealing the ideological position assumed by the newspapers because in many cases the news convey the point of view of the journalist, which may also be implicit. Another tool is the rhetorical devices that are used in order to arouse the reader’s interest and at the same time take advantage to transmit their biased ideologies, which transforms news into subjective messages.

- Page Range:51-60
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:causativity; macrostylistic; translational language; statistics; corpus-based research
- Summary/Abstract:The present study focuses on some usage peculiarities of Spanish causative constructions «hacers(se) + Inf.», «dejar(se) + Inf.» in fiction texts translated into Spanish VS original ones. Though causative constructions do exist in many languages, they may show a wide number of asymmetric features (such as pronominal forms, present in Romanic languages, absent in English, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, etc.). As there are frequently no direct equivalents in the original text for the causative constructions, more subjective factors can influence the translator’s decision whether to use them or not. Particularly, it turned out that translators tend to exaggerate a «favorite» construction or to underuse some stylistic devices. A million-tokens corpus demonstrates it to be a strong tendency in translated fiction text, unlike in the original ones.

- Author(s):José Manuel González Calvo
- Language:Spanish
- Subject(s):Language studies, Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Syntax
- Page Range:61-69
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:sentence; phrase; verb phrase; text; syntax
- Summary/Abstract:This paper affirms that the subject-predicate relationship is characteristic of the verb phrase, and not of the sentence. The subject is a syntactic function that is carried out within the verb phrase not outside it. If the sentence is defined as the sequence which includes the above-mentioned relationship, the concept of sentence would be redundant. However, there are strong differences between the two. The author of this paper argues that the sentence is a paradigmatic unit, as opposed to the verb phrase which is a category of the syntagmatic unit, the phrase. Furthermore, the sentence belongs to the declarative level of the textual part of grammar in contrast to the phrase (including the verb phrase) that belongs to the syntactic part of grammar. The concepts of sentence and phrase are thus both necessary but they do not converge.

- Summary/Abstract:Everyone knows that legal language is substantial part of ordinary language. However, when reading legal text we have the impression that we are entering a different language reality. That is because the categories in the legal language, their functions and organization describe the reality in a different way. To illustrate this phenomenon we decided to focus on the importance of the concept of metaphor. The main objective of this work is to present and analyze the different roles played by spatial metaphors in legal language. From methodological guidelines of cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis, we examine the selected metaphors in legal language.

- Summary/Abstract:In my paper I want to focus on the presentation of the characteristic features of persuasive discourse of a very particular and relatively new type of so-called men’s magazines – whose manner of both choosing topics and presenting information resembles more magazines addressed to women with economic power („Glamour” or „Cosmopolitan”) than the press traditionally addressed to men („Playboy”). My analysis will be based on the texts of different nature from magazines „Men’s Health” (in its Spanish, English and Polish version) and „GQ” (as it still does not have a Polish edition, instead I will use its equivalent – the monthly „Logo”). Comparing the results obtained with material collected during my previous studies of women’s press, I will try to emphasize and illustrate the trend of modern advertising to erase borders between genders.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper presents a contrastive analysis of the use of tenses in deontic clauses in the Polish and Spanish civil codes. Deontic clauses are understood as clauses conveying deontic meanings such as: obligativity, prohibitivity, permissivity, or immunitivity. In both civil codes, deontic clauses can be either in the present or in the future tense. The use of these tenses, however, is different in each text. The author discusses in which situations a given tense is used and analyses possible influences of the tense change on the meaning of the whole clause.

We also intend to roughly evaluate the popular opinion that it is Castilian which overtook in its evolution other medieval dialects of Latin.

- Author(s):José Portolés
- Language:Spanish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Pragmatics, Psycholinguistics
- Page Range:136-152
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:Pragmatics; self-censorship; triadic interaction; mind theory; discursive identity
- Summary/Abstract:In Pragmatics, censure is considered to be part of a triadic interaction, in which a third participant impedes or tries to impede communication between a sender and a receiver. In the case of self-censorship, one participant in the interaction, because of his understanding of mind theory, predicts what might constitute a threat to the ideology of the censor and try to avoid it. In such a situation, we can distinguish between the self-censorship of the sender of a message and that of the receiver. When the sender self-censures, as is most common, he or she may effect total censure – by avoiding, suppressing, or replacing the message – or may only effect partial censure, whereby he or she is limited to modifying the message to make sure the censor is not offended.

- Author(s):Magdalena Sędek
- Language:Spanish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive linguistics
- Page Range:153-163
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:image schema; metaphor; metonymy; phraseology; cognitive linguistics
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is a cognitive analysis of the most important conceptual images of insanity and foolishness reflected in Spanish idiomatic expressions, which are based on image schemas. Furthermore, it is irrefutable that the head’s function is always the locus of the mind and the intellect; this allowed the identification of the first metaphorical-metonymical model: THE SPACIAL LOCATION, which is closely linked to the image schema of A CONTAINER (including its subordinate variants INSIDE–OUT, FULL–EMPTY, NEAR–FAR). The second model identified through the analysis is POSSESSION, an example of which is the schema of A (VALUABLE) OBJECT and A MACHINE. As a result, the state of being insane brings to mind, amongst others, metaphorical images of being outside of the container, its emptiness, damage or loss, whereas the quality of being foolish is primarily conceptualised as having an empty container and one’s short-sightedness.

- Author(s):Witold Sobczak
- Language:Spanish
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Syntax
- Page Range:164-172
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:posteriority; future; tense system; modality; syntax
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to indicate some similarities and differences between the reasons for the disappearance of the future subjunctive and the ‘decline’ of the future indicative in contemporary Spanish. By analysing the characteristics of the subjunctive and the indicative moods, the author will focus on the (im)possibility of replacing those two tenses by other verbal forms. Furthermore, a diachronic-synchronic approach will be applied to discuss the likelihood of a functional reduction of the future indicative. It seems possible that its usage will become restricted to a modal function whose role, in contrast to the future subjunctive, is transparent and cannot be substituted by another form. Therefore, the future indicative may follow in the footsteps of the compound future tense being rarely employed to denote posteriority.

- Page Range:173-183
- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:vesre; Argentina; lunfardo; American Spanish; vesreism
- Summary/Abstract:The vesre of Buenos Aires is, apparently, a linguistic phenomenon which has been rarely studied and is known only in a limited way. Its analysis is quite difficult for several reasons. First, because its components often belong to the spoken discourse, and therefore the lexicographic sources often do not include them at all, or they are incorporated in a strongly arbitrarily way. Second, the words that may be considered as vesreisms (Sp. vesreísmos), depending on a dictionary, are treated in different ways. For these reasons, the research conducted in the present paper aims to explain the premises necessary to investigate the vesre of Buenos Aires linguistically as well as to analyse several dictionaries in order to make certain lexicographic observations.

- Page Range:184-193
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:New grammar; Spanish phonetics and phonology; phonetic description; segmental system; phonetic change
- Summary/Abstract:The publication by Tomas Navarro Tomas of two fundamental books pertaning to Spanish phonetics („Manual de pronunciación española” (1918) y „Manual de entonación española” (1944) gave rise to the appearance of more publications dealing with the description and functioning of the Spanish phonetic and phonological systems. All the subsequent publications – which were based on Tomas Navarro Tomas’ books – attempted to develop, define more precisely and verify the theses formulated by the Father of Spanish phonetics. The author of this article presents a new important book which is indubitably an exceptional publication and constitutes a breakthrough in Spanish linguistics. His remarks are confined to the Spanish segmental system and phonetic change. The book came into being as the result of a close cooperation between 22 academies of the Spanish language („Nueva gramática de la lengua española. Fonética y fonologia”, vol. 3, 2011).

The study presents the characteristics of this type of lexical units and the difficulties encountered in the process of linguistic analysis from the point of view of natural languages processing. We present in detail the two basic notions that build the article title. Note that this type of constructions has specific characteristics and the degree of fixedness is different. For this objective we present these characteristics and their aim to the recognition of adjectival phrases and its translation.

- Keywords:cultural linguistics; pragmatics; cognitive linguistics; notional decomposition; semantics
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of this article is to present the research apparatus of the cultural linguistics. I understand the cultural linguistics as a multidimensional research system which, depending of the phenomenon under investigation uses various tools. Hence, the research apparatus of cultural linguistics covers both cognitive and pragmatic tools and it can also use the instruments typical for ethnolinguistics. However the most important tool serving in a sense as an authorization of later cognitive and pragmatic studies is an analysis by means of notional decomposition. When a subject of research is language changes created mainly as a result of an encounter of two different visions of the world, a decomposition of notional structure of the expressions into basic elements seems the most reasonable and even a necessary starting point.

- Summary/Abstract:Assuming all teaching activity as a performative act with ethical implications, this article focuses on how traditional points of view about language still appear in handbooks, despite new anthropological as well as semiological theories. Regarding teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, the paper analyses several contemporaries textbooks, in order to conclude that most of them not only show structuralist views, but also a strong link between culture and language, with a biased Hispanocentrism (at least in books printed in Spain). Several of these out-of-date teaching discourses, however, still find their place in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, though some of its key points are communicative competence and the active protagonism of students.

Interviews with teachers, questionnaires in three languages, and classroom observation were used. The results of this first stage allowed the identification of language proficiency of the students in the three languages studied, and the teaching style of the teachers. Mapudungun had low scores on the comprehension test, while Spanish and English had acceptable levels. Although the communicative approach to the language was similar in the three teachers’ practices, it was observed that there were significant differences in the methodology implemented in the three languages.

In this paper, taking as example the center of interest 02 ‘Clothes’, from the available lexicon of the province of Córdoba (Bellón Fernández, 2011), I analyze the composition of word lists, using three criteria: a) the value of the index of lexical availability, b) the lexicological description of lexical items, and c) the levels of language (styles).

- Summary/Abstract:The experts have been interested in the process of the second language acquisition for many years. However, the significant changes appeared in the second decade of the twentieth century. The establishment of the Council of Europe, an ogranization which associates 47 countries, provided new common standards of the evaluation of the language proficiency. The most important aim of the work of the Council of Europe was to promote the multilingualism and multiculturalism to create between the European citizens understanding and openness for other cultures. What is more, common norms facilitated people the mobility because the certificates they were receiving started beeing recognisable in ither countries. The creation of the CEFR and European Language Portfolio was the beginning of the new way of understanding the process of the second language acquisition which, nowadays, has to be transparent for students. Furthermore, students have become more conscious and responsible for their own learning. - Summary/Abstract:The aim of this paper is to present the didactic potential of Cognitive Linguistic, and in particular of Cognitive Theory of Metaphor in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. The present article, whose subject matter are idiomatic expressions which belong to the core of phraseology and can be viewed as prototypical phraseological units, not only attempts to demonstrate the reasons why this theoretical framework is extremely beneficial in the foreign language classroom but also focuses on role that the iconic dimension of idioms (mental image) and its metaphorical value (conceptual metaphors) have in the teaching and learning process. In other words, particular attention will be paid to research into the application of the theoretical postulates of Cognitive Linguistics to didactics of phraseology.
