Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present a few observations on verbal politeness in the culture of Spanish language by paying particular attention to characteristics of the pragmatic category called ‘face’. In this short presentation, the author tries to emphasize the general nature of this category (in principle homogeneous) in the investigated culture as well as its certain shades affecting differences in the linguistic expression of politeness in Spanish speaking countries.
