Summary/Abstract: The text is based on considerations concerning the function of literature in human life. The significant role assigned to literary creativity makes it important in the process of both education and upbringing. For this reason, the aim of the article is to present the degree to which contemporary Polish students in grades 1-3 of the primary school are interested in literature. The analysis is based on the results of the survey. The concept of children's literature was defined, and the necessity for the presence, knowledge and interpretation of literary texts, both in the elementary education of the child and in his/her broadly understood upbringing process, was indicated. The above mentioned concept of the "biology of reading" reinforces our belief that reading literary texts is beneficial and necessary during childhood.
