Summary/Abstract: Gravestones, whose origin bases on the various belief systems, are an important part of our history and culture as a joint product of their era, environment, beliefs, traditions and sense of art. They are not only interesting because of their sense of art but also through their enriched socio-cultural content by standing as a historical document that provides concrete information about names, appellations, groups of profession and cause of deaths. Gravestones, which are fastly decomposing due to environmental and other poorly conditions, are the certificate of past lived lives, representing the the smallest monuments of Turkish art. The tradition of graving in Turks has been going on since the origin of Turkish history untill today. Through the extent of the research, the gravestones of 19th century Ottoman, found in the cemetery of Küçük İmaret, Trabzon has been examined and presented with all of their aspect in the frame of Art History. These art pieces which are an important part of our cultural legacy must be documented and protected at all cost. The examples of gravestones of the selected area has been introduced as two classified groups, one representing the women’s gravestones other representing the men’s. On the evolution and conclusion part, the material, form, technic, graving and ornaments of 19th century gravestones has been examined and analyzed. Also, the similarity of central Istanbul style performance, seen in the selected areas gravestones has been confirmed.
