MONOGRAPHS OF ARTISTS MADE BY THE COLLABORATORS OF GEORGE OPRESCU IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD

Summary/Abstract: Monographs of Artists Made by the Collaborators of George Oprescu in the Interwar Period. One of George Oprescu’s most important contributions to the development of Romanian art historiography is indirect, by the creation and coordination of research teams within Bucharest University’s Art History Seminar. During this period, under the patronage of the Romanian Academy, Elena Simu Fund, beside Oprescu’s monographs, a series of several other ones are issued, written by his students. A total of eight volumes have been published, two authored by George Oprescu, while the others are written by Elena Zara (G. Panaiteanu-Bardasare), Barbu Teodorescu (Constantin Lecca), Teodora Voinescu (Gheorghe Tattarescu, 1818-1894), Günther Ott (Sculptorii din familia Storck), Ion Frunzetti (Ştefan Ionescu-Valbudea) şi George Dragomirescu (George Demetrescu Mirea). These have been preceded by a series named Artists and Monuments in Romania (Artişti şi monumente din România.), from which just one volume has been issued, written by Teodora Voinescu (Anton Chladek şi începuturile picturii româneşti). These writings are all artist monographs, with the exception of Günther Ott’s, which is dedicated to the three artists of the Storck family. All these monographs primarily aim at clarifying the details of the artist’s biographies, based on archive material and other sources which are, as much as possible, objective. Although most of the works include lists of works known or seen by the authors, none claims itself to be a complete catalogue raisonée. Oprescu’s works together with those of his student’s bring into prominence in Romanian art historiography the objective scientific monograph which aims at creating a work containing ultimate information that will be there for good, that can be amended by addition and not rewriting.
