Summary/Abstract: As a main pillar of society, education has the role to identify and react to the diversity and needs of the pupils, to help them in their learning activities and to provide differentiated or individualized school curricula and methods, when needed. The present article tackles the issues regarding learning difficulties in primary school pupils. These more or less severe difficulties can affect the pupils’ personality and learning development, so they have long term effects and implications on their lives. In the first part of the paper, the main notions referring to learning difficulties or disabilities will be presented, as well as the characteristics of pupils in the primary school cycle that face these difficulties. Next, the article will underline certain aspects of learning difficulties, focusing mainly on the living environment of these atypical pupils: their family, school life and social-emotional state. The role of education in supporting pupils with learning difficulties is tackled in the next subchapter, by presenting the most relevant information regarding these issues. Last, some conclusions based on data and information available in this field will be presented, and we will also formulate some opportunities for intervention and support that aim to improve the situation of pupils with learning difficulties.
