Summary/Abstract: Conducting is easily mistakable for a non-verbal form of communication, inasmuch as it does not have an auditory realisation. Nevertheless, there are different aspects that take part within its domain and that determine a complex network of both verbal and non-verbal features present simultaneously during the musical performance. An important part of the process is the communication recipient and his or her level of knowledge of the meaning of each aspect of the conductor’s gestures. However, in order to determine where the borderline between the two modalities lies, this paper looks into the different verbal and non-verbal features of both spoken and sign languages, in addition to the very concept of the linguistic sign. It becomes apparent that the interpretant of each type of sign is the main determining factor whether a certain sign is going to be decoded as a verbal or a non-verbal one.
