Summary/Abstract: The Church in its earliest days had no institutions specializing in educating future members of the clergy. In the 16th century the Council of Trent commenced a large-scale formation of priestly seminaries; the creation of seminaries became a sign of the pastoral zeal of individual bishops. The 1917 Code of Canon Law included detailed legislation on priestly seminaries. The Second Vatican Council’s decree concerning the education of priests, Optatam totius, followed the Council of Trent’s vision of seminary education, and therefore even the post-Council Code of Canon Law of 1983 includes no substantial changes to the education of future members of the clergy.
