Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to signal to the reader the great importance of intercultural teaching as well as intercultural competence in the era of globalization and Europeanization, where contacts among representatives of various cultural circles are commonplace. In that context special attention has been drawn to the presentation of diverse causes of misunderstandings in intercultural communication derived from cultural differences. Strongly determined cultural semantics, body language and taboo subjects (specific to a given culture) were discussed in greater detail. Subsequently “the rules” have been formed on that basis. With regard to dialectics “what is mine and what is foreign” as well as the necessity of so called cultural transfer in the frames of teaching a foreign language, those rules should be taken into account during lessons and therefore make students more sensitive to aspects which could promote misunderstandings in intercultural contacts.
