Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with informatics and information technologies in general education and competitions as a motivator for engaging pupils in technology education. The overview of the international “Bebras” contest is provided, together with the analysis of the year 2009 results. The contest itself was initiated in Lithuania, with the first contest held there in 2004. Since then, the contest has gained a considerable popularity amongst european high school students (over 100 thousand participants in 2009). the primary goals of this contest include encouraging students to take interest in information technology, and providing means for selecting the most creative and talented among those who are interested. the task creation process puts a strong focus on independent thinking, problem solving, and applying It knowledge in real-world situations. the overview of the guidelines and the classification model is supplemented by a set of sample tasks.
