The study used the classical method of calculating the demographic dependency ratio. Suggested by the author's method uses concepts of the potential demography. This method shows the ratio of the number of years that a population has to survive in non-production period to the number of years, it has to survive during the production period. A value of 1 means that the number of years for survival during the production period is approximately equal to the number of years for survival in non-productive time for all people living at the time of the study population. Demographic dependency ratio in Poland expressed by the classical measure indicates decreasing, while the potential measure shows growing. Therefore, in future we will see in Poland the demographic dependency ratio growth. According to the author it is necessary to gradually increase and equalization of retirement ages for women and men in the perspective of several years.
