Summary/Abstract: The laws of the Himyarites, ascribed by the patristic tradition to the activities of St. Gregentios in the 6th century, represent an attempt aiming to convert the Himyarites to Christianity by force of law. No doubt, the Himyarites were to serve the Byzantine Emperor Justinian as his allies during the struggle against the Persians in the Arabic peninsula. The laws chiefly deal with violations of ecclesiastical law. Punishments for such offences are of local origin, very cruel from the present-day point of view. Corporal punishment, in various forms, is prevalent. It is followed by fines dispensed in a fewer number of cases. Enforced labor as a form of punishment was recorded in a few cases. The laws of St. Gregentios also included alternative forms of punishment, a combination of several kinds of punishment, and public punishment. Capital punishment, although rare, was also mentioned.
