Summary/Abstract: Gregory Camblak (c. 1364-1419/20) is one of the most interesting and unusual personalities in the history of medieval Serbian literature. Born in the Bulgarian town of Traovo, he spent his life on Mt Athos, Constantinople Moldavia, Serbia and Russia. A cosmopolitan and an excellently educated and talented writer, he lived a genuinely exciting and eventful life. An Athonite monk and convicted hesychast, he concluded his life as the Metropolitan of Kiev, negotiating Church union at the council in Constance in 1418. He arrived in Serbia in 1402, most probably at the invitation of the Despot Stefan Lazarević himself. There, as the hegoumenos of Decani monastery, he composed the liturgical collection of texts devoted to the patron of this monastery, the late Serbian king Stefan Uroš III, known as Stefan Dečanski. Camblak wrote the Life of Stefan Dečanski and in 1418 Service to Stefan Dečanski, praising this ruler-saint.
