Summary/Abstract: Rural areas due to their geographical and social specificity have different characteristics of developmental or stagnation phenomena than highly urbanized urban areas. It does not mean that rural areas should be considered in isolation from the cities and metropolitan areas. Both of these geographical and spatial systems have common features and they are in mutual correlation and interaction. The way to fight against the adverse socioeconomic phenomena occurring in rural areas is similar and is based on the same purposes, mainly it is the fight against unemployment, while creating initiative development. Both the European Union and Polish government pay special attention to regional development problems, with particular focus on rural areas. This article discusses the problems of rural development in West Pomeranian region against the background of assumptions of the National Regional Development Strategy for the period of 2010-2020.
