Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the role of genetically modified (GM) plants in agriculture of developed and developing countries. The analysis of changes in GM crop areas in multi-year revealed that the largest area of cultivation was in relatively wealthy countries, but the biggest increase of area was characterized by the poorer states. It was noticed at the same time that genetically modified plants played a distinct part in the agriculture of industrial countries, where they were introduced mainly for economic reasons, while in developing countries they were mainly used to reduce the level of malnutrition. Attention was also paid to the special position of the European Union, where the role of GM crops is relatively small and problems related to this issues are subject to legal regulations.
