Upbringing Horizon Widening and Personal Relations Construction Inside the Family, in Jasper Juul Perspective

Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The scientific goal of the article is the analysis of jasper Juul upbringing concept. In the thesis the statement was undertaken, that the foundation and the core of upbringing, from the perspective of a Danish pedagogist and family therapist Jasper Juul is the relation between the parents and a child. The pedagogical approach of Jasper Juul has reached a high popularity in the recent years. It is essential that such an analysis is performed from many aspects. This approach is intriguing from the scientific point of view. Jull, with extraordinary details presents many of the aspects of everyday family life and presents their importance for the process of upbringing. His understanding for the key pedagogics aspect is a unique and holistic concept. This approach seems to be at the same time very valuable in terms of changes and risks to family life in XXI century, in the European and American culture. It has a practical value. In the comprehensible and practical perspective, it stands for a valuable answer to the XXI century challenges. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The analytical – synthetical method was used to prepare the article. For the purpose of the thesis, the critical analysis was performed, the synthesis and interpretation of the context of the Jasper Juul books (translated into Polish language) as well as his opinions taken from other sources (e.g. delivered interviews or recorded presentations). The following research problems have been examined: what is the Jasper Juul conception of upbringing? What is the meaning of constructing personal relations among the family members? Regarding which values, the personal relations are built in the family, in the Jasper Juul concept? THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The process of the thesis begins with the presentation of Jasper Juul upbringing concept, via the analysis of the meaning of the relations among family members (first between the parents, then between the parents and a child)., till pointing out the values favoring relationships construction and space for their realization. The process of the thesis leads to the explanation the most general aspects of Jasper Juul upbringing concept, in reference to upbringing horizon widening and personal relations construction in the family. RESEARCH RESULTS: In the course of the conducted analysis, it has been determined, that the upbringing in Jasper Juul concept is equal with building personal relations. Juul declines the traditional comprehension of upbringing and gives floor to building constructive family relations. Fundamental meaning for the quality understood in such a way upbringing has the quality of the relation between parents. Juul sees children as individuals who strive for cooperation with their parents in a natural manner. The values that are beneficial for building personal relations in the family are: dignity, integrity, authenticity, responsibility, commonwealth and the leadership of adults. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Jasper Juul upbringing concept assumes, that what a child needs to grow and develop in a proper way is the personal relation with the parents, based on the value of dignity, integrity, authenticity, responsibility, commonwealth and the leadership of the parents. It successfully replaces traditionally understood upbringing as a certain set of goals, methods, means leading towards making some changes in the child’s personality, in order to structure him or her in a given way, according to the assumed ideal. Juul concept of relations on the family is the answer to experienced by many parents and perceived by the social researchers, the deficit of personal relations (connected with a multiple social-cultural changes in XXI century). The adjustment of Juul concept widens the upbringing horizons, makes us sensitive to dignity and individuality of every child, gives chance to build relations that serve to self-development, upgrade the potential of every human, build a commonwealth that shows all good in a person. As such, it is a courageous proposal to build fully personal relations with a child, free from parental dominance, concentration on child’s obedience and popular until now “upbringing” behavior.
