THE REALITY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN IGBOLAND OF NIGERIA: CAUSES AND POSSIBLE MANIFESTATION

Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence is a global problem and Nigeria is not exempted from this challenge. The menace of domestic violence has eaten deep into the fabric of the Nigerian society. Material and methods. Contemporary reference sources and scientific studies devoted mainly to the psychology and sociology were used. Results. The fact remains that majority of the victims in Igboland of Nigeria remain silent about the abuse they face in their respective homes since they have no one to talk to or nowhere to report the case. Conclusions. The government at the federal, state and local levels, religious leaders and all other people in positions of authority like traditional rulers should find lasting solutions that would help in tackling this societal menace; and also create awareness about the dangers and repercussions of engaging in domestic violence as this will lead to a massive reduction in cases of domestic violence.
