The impact of opportunity costs on farms profitability

Summary/Abstract: The primary goal of research is to define the importance of opportunity costs in the costs of production analysis of farm and profitability. The research included dairy farms, which were divided into five groups depending on volume of milk production. The results showed that the determination of economic situation of farms without taking opportunity costs into consideration can cause erroneousness in the calculation of production profitability. The calculations proved that production profitability determined by income from a family farm household was the highest in case of households with the lowest annual milk production. However, when calculating the entrepreneurs profit (costs of production in depreciation and opportunity costs) the best results were achieved in farms of an annual milk production exceeding 2 million tons.
