Summary/Abstract: An interdisciplinary approach to research will decide about the future of economics as a science to the increasing extent. This is implied by the fact that the object of economic research can in substance similar to objects of research in other sciences, described by theories and models that can be, basing on the principle of isomorphism of science, applied in other ways and to other objects. Economics of education is an example of such a subfield of economics that makes use of the legacy of other sciences. The aim of the article is to make an attempt at presenting the most important directions of research in the field of economics of education in the context of socio-economic changes in our country, and taking into consideration the cognitive value of the research and whether it can be applied. The need of interdisciplinarity in this field is underlined together with pointing to barriers to using such an approach. Additionally, the conclusions concerning a possible elimination of such barriers are formulated.
