Summary/Abstract: The recent financial and economic crisis has questioned the belief in the superiority of deregulation as a paradigm for modern economies, and even the belief in market per se. One should expect, on the basis of the state activity in resolving economic and social dilemmas in time of crisis, a significant turnaround in the ideological mood and ”the return of the state”. However, considering the power of social and economic groups, the nature of liberal reform and ”economic sclerosis” of individuals, reorientation of the role of the state in the economy is still dubious. At the same time, the end of the welfare state – the supposed consequence of the crisis – is more myth than reality. The current crisis should be seen rather as the catalyst for reforming the welfare state, especially the southern European welfare model.
