Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issue of evolution of the Catholic Church’s social teaching in terms of acceptance of the ideas of classical liberalism. As a reference point there was taken the attitude to the idea of the free market, as the main determinant of classical liberalism. For the analysis there were taken only an encyclical which are part of the official Magisterium, from Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum to Centesimus Anno by pope John Paul II. As the analysis shows the acceptance of views which are traditionally considered liberal: freedom and personal responsibility and free market concept, significantly decreased. The emphasis shifted towards the acceptance of state intervention in human life. It is especially visible on the example of ”blurring” the notion of the free market.
