Summary/Abstract: This study investigates the expansion attempts of Spain in Japan in the 16–17th century. The purpose is to outline the role of the Iberians in the development of Japan’s domestic and foreign policies, and also to set out the reasons that finally led to their failure to occupy territories in the Far East. The history of the Spanish Crown’s expansion is closely linked to the history of its traditional enemy Portugal (in that age Spain and Portugal were in personal union under the rule of Philip II of Spain) and its political and religious enemy, the Netherlands. The study is composed of different sources written in Spanish language from the 16–17th century, to make them fully understandable, the structure of the text was changed without modifying the original meaning.
