Summary/Abstract: In spite of an unusual, general silence about America in Spanish Golden Age masterworks, a less-known renaissance epic chanting the conquista of Chile gained supreme popularity in the second half of the 16th century. The poem of a Spanish noble just returned from the New World had a profound effect on the homeland’s public, on the erudites and the illiterates, on its readers and its listeners. It changed their view about a foreign and hostile world, and helped them to familiarize themselves with the shock and to accelerate the reception of the New.
