Summary/Abstract: This paper will focus on a historical foray into several education systems which employed e-learning-specific devices, designed to help improve the educational process. The first attempts to combine electronic devices with the learning process are described: among the first to achieve this goal were the staff of the Ohio State University in 1924, owing to professor Pressey, who patented the Testing Machine. Subsequently, the most important discoveries that ensued are presented chronologically, reaching the present day, when the computer, the internet and a wide range of applications, software, etc. are elements without which we cannot conceive of an efficient educational process. In addition, we recount the benefits of inserting the online environment in the educational process, as well as the disadvantages inherent in a process in which the direct, face-to-face communication between the teacher and the student is blocked. To the same extent, the online environment exposes the student to screens for a long time; nonetheless the most significant problem is the interruption of socialization between students, which leads to obvious shortcomings in terms of the psycho-social development of students.
