Summary/Abstract: The desire to counterfeit and imitate money had started as soon as metal coins first appeared – as early as the 6th century BC. In our study of the coinage of Pautalia, we processed and systematized by chronology, typology, and metric parameters a total of 3,920 coins issued by the administration of the city between the start of Emperor Antoninus Pius’ reign (138–161 AD) and the end of Emperor Caracalla’s reign (198–217 AD). Ten specimens of this monumental in terms of volume and typological variety numismatic corpus turned out to be modern counterfeits. These counterfeit coins, skilfully “processed” to acquire an appearance similar to that of antique coins, have found their way into private collections at home and abroad, sold by unscrupulous traders.
